Life Skills

Childhood is a vital stage of growth and development. It is characterised by rapid physiological changes and psychosocial maturation. It is also the stage when these young children extend their relationships beyond parents and family and are intensely influenced by their peers and the outside world in general. These are truly the years of creativity, idealism, buoyancy and a spirit of adventure. But these are also the years of experimentation and risk-taking. Life Skills come into play here.

At the primary level, students have a Life Skills class once a week.  Students are taught the values of life through stories, plays, live instances, etc.

Reading

Importance of Reading

Academic Excellence

One of the primary benefits of reading to toddlers and pre-schoolers is a higher aptitude for learning in general. Numerous studies have shown that students who are exposed to reading before preschool are more likely to do well in all facets of formal education.

Basic Speech Skills

Throughout toddlerhood and preschool, the child is learning critical language and enunciation skills. “Pretend reading”—when a toddler pages through a book with squeals and jabbers of delight—is a very important pre-literacy activity. As a pre-schooler, your child will likely begin sounding out words on his own.

Better Communication Skills

When they spend time reading, they’ll be much more likely to express themselves and relate to others in a healthy way. By witnessing the interactions between the characters in the books, the child is gaining valuable communication skills.

Mastery of Language

Early reading has been linked to a better grasp of the fundamentals of language.

More Logical Thinking Skills

Another illustration of the importance of reading is that it gives the ability to grasp abstract concepts, apply logic in various scenarios, recognise cause and effect, and utilise good judgment. The children begin to relate the scenarios in books to what’s happening in their own world.

Acclamation to New Experience

As the child approaches a major developmental milestone or a potentially stressful experience, sharing a relevant story is a great way to help ease the transition.

Enhanced Concentration and Discipline

Along with reading comprehension comes a stronger self-discipline, longer attention span, and better memory retention, all of which will serve the child well.

Reading is Fun

Reading helps the children to view books as an indulgence, not a chore. Children who are exposed to reading are much more likely to choose books over video games, television, and other forms of entertainment as they grow older.

To inculcate this practice we have reading as a part of our curriculum. From Grades I to V students have 1 – 2 reading periods every week. They have extra reading books which facilitates their endeavour.. Apart from reading, they also do different activities which enrich their language skills.

The highlight of the reading programe is the “Reading Week” which is held every year. During this week various activities are put up by students to mark the occasion. Some of the activities are Book Mark Making, Book Cover Making, Role Plays, Story Writing, etc. There is also have a Book Fair during that week. Guest talks by authors are also conducted during Reading Week.

Assessment and Evaluation

The curriculum is designed laying emphasis on both scholastic and non-scholastic aspects for the all round development of the students. The academic year is divided into two semesters.

For Grades I to IV, a review is conducted once a term. Grade V has one review and Term End Examination for each semester.

The Monthly Reviews, Formative and Summative Assessments include Project Based Assessments and simple tasks like notebook completion and submission, dictation, puzzles, drawings, quiz, role play, dramatization, debate, book review, seminars, presentations, worksheets and simple projects to test the students’ knowledge, understanding and application skills.

Apart from this several activities are conducted that are targeted to hone specific skills that are required for every student throughout their lives.
